What is GHS?

GHS is an abbreviation for Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).
Developed by the United Nations, the GHS is designed to standardize the labeling of hazardous material in order to protect human health and the environment. The GHS also provides a model for countries without an existing system.

The GHS standards in the identification of hazardous materials are designed to assist in the protection of workers, consumers, emergency responders and the transport industry.

The United States, most of Europe, China, Russia, Australia, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, Japan, Scandinavia, South Korea and New Zealand are among the countries that participate.

GHS labeling contains graphic pictograms and written information regarding hazards, handling, response, storage and disposal.  Supplier information includes name, address and phone numbers of suppliers.

What is BS5609?

BS5609 is the British Standard for adhesive labels that have been tested for use in marine environments. BS5609 compliant labeling materials are designed to be dimensionally stable while resistant to salt water, sunlight, weathering and abrasion.

Part Two Compliance refers to blank label testing. Part Three Compliance refers to testing printing with specific printers, ink and label material combinations when used together.
